Consideration of EOL requirements
Based onseveral papers published in the field of ELVs, Mat Saman and Blount stated that there are four main EOL requirements that automotive designers have to consider during automotive design and development process;design consideration, material used, economic aspect and directive requirements(Mat Saman and Blount, 2008).The four EOL requirements have been summarised as follows.
Design consideration
Product design plays a vital role in ensuring sustainable development of products. It is at the design stage namely the concept and embodiment design stage that Design for X in the form of design guidelines or tools are incorporated into product design (Wahab, 2010). Design plays a key role in determining economic and environmental benefits of remanufacturing (Kerr and Ryan, 2001).The main element in ELVs concept is the design consideration as the design decisions on the part of automotive designers can make automotive recycling a safer and more efficient process by eliminating the presence of hazardous substances. It enables products to be easily dismantled and enable components to be remanufactured several times (Mat Saman and Blount, 2008). Products that are designed for disassembly and
remanufacturing can deliver much greater savings than can be achieved throughthe remanufacturing of a product that was not designed with this intention (Kerr and Ryan, 2001).
