 1. vowel + vowel

(1) If the first sound is [i], [a?], [e?], or [??], add a Y sound [j] to connect:

[i]: [??]: [a?]: [e?]:

 

for example:

the apple [ði??jæ p?l]
toy airplane [t????j??? ple?n]
my uncle [ma???j?? k?l]
say it [se??j?t]

He is happy 
She ate a burger
That boy is hungry

 

(2) If the first sound is [u], [a?], [o?], or [ju] add a W sound [w] to connect:

[u]: [a?]: [o?]: [ju]:

 

for example:

blue automobile [blu??w?d?m?bil]
how about [ha??w??ba?t]
slow animal [slo???wæ n? m?l]
few others [fju??w?ð ??z]

(3) In all other cases, just connect the vowel sounds, without a glide consonant.

[ɑ]: grandpa eats [?g?ænd pɑ?its]
[?]: law is [l???z]
[??]: idea Anna [a??di???æn?]
