sticky fingers粘糊的手指
After breakfast, I sent the children to school and then I went to the shops. It was still early when I returned home. The children were at school, my hu *** and was at work and the house was quiet. So I decided to make some meat pies. In a short time I was busy mixing butter and flour and my hands were soon covered with sticky pastry. At exactly that moment, the telephone rang. Nothing could have been more annoying. I picked up the receiver beeen o sticky fingers and was di *** ayed when I recognized the voice of Helen Bates. It took me ten minutes to persuade her to ring back later. At last I hung up the receiver. What a mess! There was pastry on my fingers, on the telephone, and on the doorknobs. I had no sooner got back to the kitchen than the doorbell rang loud enough to wake the dead. This time it was the postman and he wanted me to sign for a registered letter!

求一片大学英语演讲稿 题目是culture through music 谢谢~
Musicology, the scholastic study of music focuses primarily on the music of Western culture including all relevant humanities and ranges of musical forms, styles, genres, and traditions. Ethnomusicology reaches beyond the history of Western music, including variety of cultures, studying music as a social and cultural phenomenon. Ethnomusicologists focus on the anthropology and ethnography of different cultures and nations in music. By examining a culture\'s music they can derive and apply theories and methods of sociology and cultural studies to pare cultures.
For example in the Ethnomusicology Journal Vol. 43, No. 3 published in the fall of 1999 by The Society for Ethnomusicology, Nancy Guy observes the presence of political authority in the Peking Opera.
"This study shows that state control of politically symbolic institutions, such as Peking opera, can clearly reflect the policies and ideology basic to a regime\'s strategies for governing. The recent democratization of Taiwan and the subsequent shift in its dominant ideology offers an opportunity to examine the fate of a politicized art form in the wake of such a change."
Guy pares the Peking Opera that is dominated by political figureheads with the free expression of creative outlets in American and other western cultures.
One of the most notable examples of this study of cultural music to make theories about the history and ponents of a specific culture, is the research of Colin Macmillan Turnbull, the famous British-American anthropologists, whose popular work about the Mbuti Pygmies of Zaire spotlights ethnomusicology. Turnbull\'s books The Forest People about the Mbuti Pygmies and The Mountain People about the Ik people of northern Uganda inspired future studies in the field of ethnomusicology.
The Society for Ethnomusicology is one of the three major international associations, founded in 1955 it is an academic society that not only helps bring together musicologists and ethnomusicologists and creating a catalogue of research projects and bibliographies in its quarterly journal, Ethnomusicology. Thirty-o universities in the United States of America have an ethnomusicology, including University of California in Los Angeles, who has the oldest ethnomusicology program.
Studying music can tell a lot about a culture. Helen Myers found that instrumental folk music was held in high regard in the northern European countries of Finland, Sweden, and Norway, where the natives\' motive of playing instruments is to pass on traditions to younger generations.
Ethnomusicologists research music and then use the data found to apply to sociological and cultural studies, which can not only pare cultures, but also emphasizes the unique structures of non-Western culture.

珍惜生活中的每一天
law opened the bottom drawer of my sisters bureau and lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. this, he said, is not a slip. this is lingerie. he discarded the tissue and handed me the slip.
it was exquisite, silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb of lace. the price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached.
jan bought this the first time we went to new york, at least 8 or 9 years ago. she never wore it. she was saving it for a special oasion.
well, i guess this is the oasion.
he took the slip from me and put it on the bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician. his hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the drawer shut and turned to me, dont ever save anything for a special oasion. every day you re alive is a special oasion.
i remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when i helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores that follow an unexpected death. i thought about them on the plane returning to california from the midwestern town where my sisters family lives. i thought about all the things that she hadnt seen or heard or done. i thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special.
im still thinking about his words, and theyve changed the weeds in the garden. im spending more time with my family and friends and less time in mittee meetings. whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savour, not endure. im trying to recognize these moment now and cherish them.
im not saving anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special. event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unsped, the first camellia blossom… i wear my good blazer to the market if i feel like it. my theory is if i look prosperous, i can shell out $28. 49 for one *** all bag of groceries without wincing. im not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party going friends.
someday and one of these days are losing their grip on my vocabulary. if its worth seeing or hearing or doing, i want to see and hear and do it now. im not sure what my sister wouldve done had she know that she wouldnt be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted.
i think she would have called family members and a few close friends. she might have called a few former friends to apologize, and mend fences for past squabbles. i like to think she would have gone out for a chinese dinner, her favorite food. im guessing. ill never know.
its those little things left undone that would make me angry if i knew that my hours were limited. angry because i put off seeing good friends whom i was going to get in touch with someday. angry because i hadnt written certain letters that i intended to write one of these days. angry and sorry that i didnt tell my hu *** and and daughter often enough how much i truly love them.
im trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. and every morning when i open my eyes, i tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath truly, is... a gift from god.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to improve my oral English. Thank you

Discover Yourself
Ever since the accelerated development of human civilization, perpetual scientific discoveries of nature had accompanied mankind all along the journey. It was by discovering the world around us that human beings have been able to lead a more sophisticated life. However, as G.K. Chesterton once said, “One may understand the cosmos, but never the ego; the self is more distant than any star.” Similarly, our life is a journey of unrelenting efforts to discover more of ourselves.
When I was 6 I constantly pictured myself as an elegant and skilled pianist rendering Chopin’s nocturne beautifully on the stage, receiving warm applause after my performance. As I furthered my piano lessons, it was hard to be oblivious of my non-gifted skills. Sometimes I couldn’t help but have this feeling of despair when I woke up to the reality and discovered that my goal was unrealistic. Brutal but real, it was the first time I had discovered that I couldn’t have it all.
When I was 12 I thought the coolest job in the entire universe was to be a surgeon. I spent hours and hours watching the drama “Grey’s Anatomy”, and couldn’t help falling in love with the kind of life those doctors lead on the screen. I was utterly mesmerized by the scalpel and all those fancy medical terms they use. However, I stopped dreaming about being a surgeon when I discovered that it was the idea of being a surgeon that appealed to me, not what it truly was. Therefore, the dream ended and I discovered some more about myself.
This year I turned 16, I could proudly say I do not dream to be but ascertain to pursue being a lawyer in the future. Since junior high school I was always awarded the “most eloquent debater” in every single debate I participated in. I cannot only think logically but also deliver my thoughts promptly. My huge interest in philosophy also adds to my reasoning whenever I tried to argue on something equivocal. Being aware of the obstacles and hardships on the way to becoming a great lawyer never panics me, for the simple reason that I have this faith and passion in what I am aspiring after.
G.K. Chesterton was absolutely correct, the most complicated part of comprehending the world is the study of the somehow smaller world—ourselves. I subsequently realized that growing up is the process of discovering ourselves; we get to know what we truly are, and become who we dream to be. As we shape ourselves, and as we shape our lives, we gradually become more aware of our limits and potentials and consequently learn to adjust to what’s out there. And by that, ladies and gentleman, I’m proud to say that I’ve discovered part of myself, still discovering today standing on this stage, and hopefully a lot more in the future. I will always keep this embedded into my heart that things do not change, we do.
