51. N-Queens

The n-queens puzzle is the problem of placing n queens on an n x n chessboard such that no two queens attack each other.

Given an integer n, return all distinct solutions to the n-queens puzzle. You may return the answer in any order.

Each solution contains a distinct board configuration of the n-queens’ placement, where ‘Q’ and ‘.’ both indicate a queen and an empty space, respectively.

Example 1:

Input: n = 4
Output: [[".Q..","...Q","Q...","..Q."],["..Q.","Q...","...Q",".Q.."]]
Explanation: There exist two distinct solutions to the 4-queens puzzle as shown above

Example 2:

Input: n = 1
Output: [["Q"]]

Constraints:

1 <= n <= 9

深度优先回溯解法

下面的推导出Queen可以互相攻击的公式

  1. 行相同x == row
  2. 列相同y == col
  3. 左对角线相同x - y = row - col
  4. 右对角线相同x + y = row + col

    用树形结构调用,形象化recursive回溯调用路径

The reason it checks (x + j == y + i || x + y == i + j || x == i):

Every time we find a existing ‘Q’, 3 conditions need to be met before we can place a new ‘Q’ in the new column:

  1. no confict in columns : self explanatory as we put ‘Q’ col by col.
  2. no confict in rows : x == i
  3. no conflict in diagonals : Math.abs(x-i) == Math.abs(y-j)
    For Math.abs(x-i) == Math.abs(y-j),
if x > i, y > j , x - i = y - j => x + j = y + i
if x < i, y < j, i - x = j - y => x + j = y + i
if x > i, y < j, x - i = j - y => x + y = i + j
if x < i, y > j, i - x = y - j => x + y = i + j
