Guangzhouers, the season of spring is upon us! Wave goodbye to the winter blues and slip into your outdoor footgear – it’s time to bask in the verve and dynamism of spring in the City of Flowers! To help you make the most of the season, we've rounded up five of our favorite locations around Guangzhou to relish the scenic beauty of surrounding sites.
Located in the northern town of Paitan in Zengcheng District, Baishuizhai is a scenic zone that covers an area of 170 square kilometers. This brilliant location features an astounding waterfall, mountaintop lakes and a step path of nearly 10,000 stairs (a great place to stay in shape).
Surrounded by mountains, the highest of which is 1,088 meters, Baishuizhai is renowned for its wealth of natural resources, including a primeval forest, wetland and canyon.
Cost: RMB 60 entry
Hours of operation: 8.30am-5.30pm
How to get there: Take a bus from Tianhe Coach Terminal to Conghua Coach Terminal where you will find a bus to the Baishuizhai Scenic Zone.
A popular destination for leisure cycling, Dafushan Forest Park, located 7 kilometers from Chimelong, occupies 6,000 square kilometers. Known as the ‘air purifier’ of Panyu District (for its abundance of trees, duh), this beautiful location harbors a number of man-made lakes surrounding the area’s highest peak – Dafushan Mountain. Dafushan Forest has seen an average of 2,000 visitors daily since it was constructed by the government with a hefty RMB100 million investment.

Hours of operation: 8am-6pm
How to get there: Take bus No.109 from Hangxi Changlong Metro Station (Line 3) to Dafushan Forest Park.
Located in the east of Dongguan, Yinpingshan (silver vase) Mountain is the highest peak in the city. From February to March, a sea of rhodoleia (a red flower) blossom on the southeastern face of the mountain, a sight too striking to be missed. A huge reservoir in the center of the park allows visitors to fish.

How to get there: Take a train from Guangzhou East Railway to Zhangmutou Railway Station. Then take a taxi to Yinpingshan mountain (about RMB60).
Shimen National Forest Park, located in the northeastern part of Conghua District, boasts over 50 scenic spots, numerous recreational activities and Guangzhou’s highest peak (1,210 meters). Adored as the Arcadia of Guangzhou, the park is famous not only for bountiful flora species but also for its rare animals, such as beavers and pangolins.
Cost: RMB 40 entry
Hours of operation: 9am-5pm
How to get there: Take a bus from Tianhe Coach Terminal to Conghua Coach Terminal. Then take a taxi to Shimen National Forest Park (about RMB100).
North of Shimen National Forest Park is the picturesque Liuxihe National Forest Park, an area that features over 10 recreational programs – including paintball, speedboat riding and an ethnic cultural experience. The park is equipped with villas, lakeside restaurants, KTVs and swimming pools fed by a mountain spring.
Liuxihe National Forest Park also features an island dedicated to the breeding of macaque monkeys that was co-founded by the IFAW. The park allows visitors to feed and photograph the monkeys, as well as enjoy performances by the rare primates.
