Spring is here, or at least we just had the festival, so it must be close. In honour of spring that is the theme we are using for today’s batch of idioms.

The grass is always greener on the other side

When you feel like the other choice will be better, even though in reality it probably won’t be.

NOTE: This is often shortened to just ‘the grass is always greener’.

“That sounds like a much better job than I have, but as they say the grass is always greener.”

Ray of sunshine

Someone who brings joy when they arrive

“My son really is my ray of sunshine; I can’t wait for him to come home from school each afternoon.”

Have spring fever

To be full of joy that the spring season has arrived.When spring arrives flowers bloom, and people feel in a better mood as the cold winter months are over.

“You seem to be in a great mood, do you have spring fever?”

Egg someone on

To encourage someone to do something

“The cheerleader egged me on to finish the race.”

Be no spring chicken

When you are no longer young and energetic

“I want to dance with my grandson, but I am no spring chicken.”

Walk on eggshells

To act in a nervous manner

“I have to walk on eggshells around my wife when she is in one of her mood.”

Spring into action

To get to work suddenly

“I get out of bed and spring into action every morning at 7am.”

Have all of one’s eggs in one basket

When you put all of your thought, energy and time into one plan

“I have all my eggs in the IELTS basket; I haven’t considered TOEFL or GRE at all.”
