After a long, coronavirus induced break, new and old members finally could convene last night for a traditional Spark Club meeting! Admittedly, we were all a bit rusty, but we managed to pull the meeting off quite successfully. Inspired by our Thememaster Steven, we began this season by sharing our embarrassing moments.

Although this was Amy’s first official meeting, she didn’t hesitate to take on a function role, the vital role of meeting timer. Look at how seriously she took the task, no wonder she earned an award for “best function role” at this meeting! She was strict but fair, not hesitating to also remind our sometimes babbling president to stay within the time limit...hehe. We love that kind of courage in Spark Club!

A part of the job of taking on a function role is the task of explaining that role to the new members of Spark Club. Here we see Amy explaining the job of a timer, so we could all understand the meaning of her different colored cards. I think this is also instructive for our future careers, we should not forget that it is sometimes necessary to explain to others what it is we do exactly so we can communicate more effectively.

Drawing inspiration from Thememaster Steven’s excellent theme, the surprise topics master created some awkward situations for our members to act out. Taylor and Peter drew lots of laughs when they acted out the situation of not being able to pay due to lack of funds on your WeChat account. These two members clearly have a gift for improvisation, and we are looking forward to seeing more of their work in the future!

Thomas, today’s Surprise Topics Master, also challenged some individuals to answer questions with little preparation. We do this at every meeting, and some say that it is a great way to prepare for the IELTS speaking exam. Here, Richard shared a hilarious story about a flying mouse, that quite possibly with confuse future archeologists....I wish you were all there to enjoy it!

Improving our English is not only about doing the work at Spark Club, we couple learning with lots of funny moments! Thank you Amber for sharing your wonderful laughter with us today!

Standing in for Winnie who unfortunately couldn’t deliver her speechtoday, Angel shared a story about being late and getting lost. Ironically, she got lost trying to find her way to our meeting room today too! Angel showed her courage by sharing this story, which I think we can all recognize ourselves in, if we are honest. We all make mistakes all the time, and all we can do is try to learn from them so we can avoid some mistakes in the future. I think Angel taught us some very useful lessons with her story.

Here we see Amber and Lexie acting out another “embarrassing moment”. I think their facial expressions speak volumes on how we should approach awkward situations, with a sense of humor!

Showing their ability to think “on their feet”, they managed to act together and find a good solution to a strange situation.

Near the end of the meeting our experienced member Taylor gave us all some feedback on the entire meeting from the perspective of the general evaluator. She gave us a hard time for starting the meeting 10 minutes behind schedule, but she was hopeful that we can improve next time. She also emphasized the important work our evaluators, and gave us some useful pointers for how to improve the quality of our evaluations.

All good things must come to an end, even a Spark Club meeting. The final order of the day was to elect tonight’s top performers. Congratulations, and thank you for your outstanding efforts!
