No VPN Needed! Google Translate APP Now Available in China!

Language barrier can create many problems for foreigners living in China. But don't worry. Here comes the solution: install Google Translate app on your phone!

On March 29, Google launched the new Translate app for ios and android in China, and you can use it without a VPN!

Highlights of Google Translate APP

1. Instant translation

This cool feature supports handy instant translation. Just point your camera at a sign or text and you'll see the translation overlaid on the screen.

2. Voice translation

This feature can automatically recognize speech in a number of widely-spoken languages to translate it into text as well as pronounce it in a user's native language.

3. Save "favourite" translations

This function enables you to save frequently used translations in case of emergencies.

4. Translate your SMS

Android users can copy text from any APP on your Android device and translate it to another language.

5. Offline mode

This feature supports offline use with downloadable language packs.

How to download?

The iOS version (5.8) of Translate is available in the Chinese App Store, while Android users need to search "Google Tranlate" in any search engine. Google Play remains unavailable.

Will Google Enter China?

Actually, Google Translate has maintained a web version that has been accessible in China for more than 8 years. But with half of China's 1.4 billion population using the Internet on mobile, the new app will give Google Translate wider reach to China-based mobile users.

Earlier this month, the US tech giant, which pulled out of China in 2010 over censorship disputes, was reportedly in talks with the government about making a comeback to the Chinese Mainland. The relaunch of the Translate app is considered one of Google's first major moves in doing so.
