这部戏剧是一出那时看来大团圆，现在看来别有意味的悲剧。

讲述的不是才子佳人的故事，而是更加俗套的才子与妓女的故事。

 

顾玉香爱上荆楚臣的才华，荆楚臣将家产当做“嫖资”。这个时候杂剧中就出现了一句“饱暖思淫欲”，当两人都的经济状态良好，自然也就会去思想一些不好的事情。

这在现在看来都是人之常情，但是这句话后，还有一句。

顾玉香和荆楚臣在一起时日渐久，荆楚臣的家产渐渐无以为继，于是老鸨便不允二人来往了。

这个时候荆楚臣饥寒交迫自然起了歹念，他连哄带骗的将顾玉香的钱财都骗走，只留下一句来日高中必娶你为妻。

这承诺也让顾玉香将自己多年的家产都交给了他。

荆楚臣将顾玉香的钱财卷走之后，自然不能留在此地，就想着离开又不知前往何处，干脆就去参加科考了。其实这就是“饱暖思淫欲”的第二句“饥寒起盗心”。

当人走到绝境的时候，总会想到走极端的方法，哪怕触碰道德底线，也在所不惜。

 

后来荆楚臣高中，顾玉香也要被老鸨卖给富商，只是顾玉香死活不从，和丫鬟偷偷逃跑去寻找荆楚臣。其实这个时候荆楚臣已经高中了，顾玉香逃跑遇到危险，千钧一发之际被已经当官的荆楚臣所救，后来两人就得以在一起了。

其实这个故事在现在看来也是一出道尽人性黑暗的戏剧，如果顾玉香没有逃跑，她这一辈子可能也就富商身边做一个小妾，荆楚臣根本没想到去找她。

可是就算去了荆楚臣的身边，顾玉香也不会幸福，作为一个妓女又怎么能给官员做妻子？
