1933年纳粹上台后, 将这首歌与冲锋队的一首战歌搅在了一起。规定在唱完这首歌的第一段后(后两段被禁), 接着唱“霍斯特·威塞尔之歌"。自此以后这首歌的第一段便被严重扭曲, 成了希特勒鼓吹种族优越论的"嘹亮号角"。估计这也是现在一些德国人天生自带优越感的根源所在吧, 文化根子里的原因, 恐怕一时半会是改不了的。

二战战败后，“德意志之歌”被禁, 盟国规定，唱这首歌要受到处罚。

1952年5月, 时任联邦总理阿登纳在和联邦总统霍伊斯的一次换函中, 同意将这首歌的第三段在国事场合重新采用。但是, 是仅仅第三段被重新提升为国歌, 还是整首“德意志之歌”,法学家们争论了38年仍无结果。直到1990年3月, 联邦宪法法院的法官们才决定，只有第三段“在刑法中受到保护”。但是一部有关国歌的正式法律却至今仍不存在。

1991年11月, 当时的联邦总统效仿40年前的方式, 在与联邦总理科尔的换函中, 共同宣布将第三段作为统一后的德国国歌。
